Former St. John's Maple Leaf will coach AHL Comets, Jason King stays on as assistant

Former St. John’s Maple Leafs defenceman Trent Cull has been named head coach of the Utica Comets, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.

Corner Brook native Jason King, who had been an assistant on Green’s staff last season, will remain in that job for the Comets

Cull comes the Syracuse Crunch, where he served as an assistant coach in two stints over eight seasons.

The 43-year-old, who also has relatives in Twillingate, appeared in 164 games over three seasons with the AHL Leafs after turning pro in 1994. In all, he played 11 seasons as a defenceman in the AHL and International Hockey League with St. John's, Houston, Springfield, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Syracuse.

He was head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves for three seasons.
