GANDER, NL – Kaitlyn Bouzane of Gander will be teammates with other female hockey players from around the world later this month, but they won't be playing in the same rink.
Hockey NL announced Thursday, March 1, Bouzane was one of two bantam female players from the province selected to take part in the 2018 Girls’ Global Game.
The event is being hosted by the Ontario Women's Hockey Association in cooperation with Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
The Canada segment of the event will be held at the Iceland Arena in Mississauga, Ont.
Victoria Bennett of St. John's was the other player selected from this province.
The pair will participate in a game, visit the Hockey Hall of Fame and attend a dinner with guest speakers.
Bouzane plays defence for the Gander Flyers under-15 female team, while Bennett is a forward for the St. John's Caps under-15 female squad.
They were selected based on an application process that included a 250-word essay explaining why they were deserving to represent Hockey NL at the event.
The Girls’ Global Game unites all federations from around the planet in celebration of the female hockey game. The event was first held in 2015 and saw 30 countries participate.
In 2017, 38 countries took part in one game over two days and brought together players from six continents as teammates.
Each country had two teams that represented Team Blue and Team White and amassed a score that was tallied as the games travelled west from New Zealand to the finale in Canada.
