Highlanders take St. John’s high school hockey title, too

The Holy Heart of Mary Highlanders are the new dominant team in St. John’s high school hockey.

 

A day after that school’s basketball team capped off a 23-0 season in high school play with a provincial 4A championship, the Highlanders’ hockey team won the Dr. Harry Roberts Trophy and the city’s high school hockey title with a 4-1 win over the Gonzaga Vikings at the Goulds Arena.

The Highlanders took the best-of-five final 3-1.

It was the third straight St. John’s High School Hockey League championship for the Highlanders. Before that, the Vikings had won a trio of consecutive city high school titles.

Noah Rowe and Jakob Hann also scored for Heart Monday. One of Mills’s goals, and Hann’s tally came into an empty net. Jude Power had the lone Gonzaga goal.

In Game 3 Sunday, Gonzaga skipped past Holy Heart 4-3 in a shootout to force a Game 4. Eric Knight, Patrick Beer and Eric Rowe had the goals in regulation time for the Vikings. Mills, Rowe and Nick Dunne scored for Holy Heart.

The Highlanders won the first games of the series by 5-2 and 3-1 scores.
