Hockey NL U16 girls win gold at Atlantic Challenge Cup

Newfoundland managed only one first-place finish at the Atlantic Challenge Cup minor hockey championship which finished up Monday in Moncton, N.B.

The Challenge Cup is staged each fall and features the top players in male under-14 and U15, and female U16 and U18 within the Program of Excellence of each of the four Atlantic provinces.

Jolena Gillard scored the winner as Newfoundland shaded Nova Scotia 5-4 for the U16 title. Maggie Connors led Newfoundland with two goals and two assists. Ashley Stratton also had two goals.

Newfoundland’s Shailynn Snow led the tournament in scoring with six goals and 10 assists in five games. Connors was second with three goals and four assists and Stratton had four goals and a helper for third spot in tourney scoring.

Newfoundland was third of four teams in male U14 and U15 play. The girls’ U18 team from this province was 0-5 and 4th.

Newfoundland Bauer Hard Hat Awards, for the players displaying a positive attitude and a stellar work ethic, went to: Jonathan Walsh (U14), Campbell Clarke (U15), Ashley Stratton (U16), and Heather Newman (U18).
