Junior hockey league opens 37th season tonight

The St. John’s Junior Hockey League kicks off its 37th season tonight in Bay Roberts with the defending champion Southern Shore Breakers heading to the Bay Arena to take on the C.B.N. Stars.

The Breakers won their first junior league championship last season, defeating the Avalon Junior Capitals in five games.

All eight teams are back again this season. Joining the Shore, C.B.N. and Avalon are St. John’s Caps, Trinity-Placentia Flyers, Northeast Eagles, CBR Renegades and Mount Pearl Blades.

Two games are set for Saturday night. C.B.N. travels to St. John’s for an 8:10 game against the Caps at Twin Rinks, while Northeast and CBR clash 7 p.m. at the C.B.S. Arena.

Sunday, Northeast plays host to Trinity-Placentia 2 p.m. at the Jack Byrne Arena, and CBR and the Blades hook up at The Glacier at 7:15 p.m.

Avalon has switched its home dates to Mondays at the Goulds Arena this season, and the Capitals will entertain the Flyers 8:40 p.m. Monday in the Goulds.
