Williams, from Bay Bulls, received the Order of Merit (Atlantic) at a Hockey Canada gala Saturday evening at the St. John's Convention Centre.

It was held in conjunction with Hockey Canada's spring congress in St. John's.

The award goes to individuals for what’s described as "faithful" service to amateur hockey in Canada.

Williams, a 2015 Hockey NL Hall of Fame inductee, was a driving force behind hockey on the Southern Shore, including serving as president of minor hockey in the area.

He was also a key figure behind the Southern Shore junior and senior teams.

Among his many duties, Williams served as chairman of provincial senior hockey, served as a director on the provincial female committee and was a branch representative on Hockey Canada.
