Maple Leafs, Osprey own 2-0 leads in provincial major midget semifinals

The St. John’s Maple Leafs and Tri-Pen Osprey each grabbed 2-0 leads as the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League best-of-seven semifinals began over the weekend in the metro St. John’s area.

At the Glacier in Mount Pearl, the league-leading Leafs downed the visiting Western Kings 9-3 on Saturday and 4-1 Sunday. The Osprey got past the East Coast Blizzard 6-4 Friday at the Glacier and 6-3 Sunday morning at Goulds Arena.
Curtis Hefferman and captain Kyle McGrath each scored four goals over the weekend for the Maple Leafs, with both recording hat tricks in the Saturday’s victory over the Kings.
St. John’s has now won 23 straight provincial league games .
Kyle Petten had a hat trick for the Osprey in its Game 1 win Friday.
The series resume next weekend, with the Leafs travelling west for three games — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — against the Kings at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, while the Osprey host the Blizzard for two games — Saturday and Sunday — at Bay Arena in Bay Roberts.
