Newfoundland's major midget teams, St. John's bantam AAA Hitmen begin play at Monctonian tourney

The five major midget teams from the provincial circuit — league-leading Western Kings, St. John’s Maple Leafs, Tri Pen Osprey, East Coast Blizzard and Central IcePak — along with the St. John’s Hitmen from the Newfoundland and Labrador AAA bantam league are in Moncton, N.B., this weekend for the annual Monctonian AAA Challenge.

The tournament is one of the most highly scouted AAA tournaments in the country, with some 130 scouts from major junior, junior A, Atlantic Canadian and U.S. universities accredited.
The QMJHL is widely represented, with over 70 scouts registered from all 16 teams in addition to QMJHL Central Scouting.
The tournament opened Thursday with all teams from this province seeing action.
Western earned a 1-1 tie with the Charlottetown Pride; St. John’s downed Panthers AHDF of Trois Rivieres, Que., the IcePak lost 5-2 to the Halifax Macs and Tri-Pen edged the Cape Breton Islanders 3-2.
The Blizzard hlost 3-1 to teh Markham, Ont., Majors in a Thursday-night game.
The bantam AAA Hitmen had one of the most dominant wins of the day, downing the Valley, N.S, Wildcats 8-1.
The tourney concludes Sunday.
