NHL scouts are certainly taking notice of 17-year-old St. John’s hockey phenom Alex Newhook.

In its most recent draft preview edition, The Hockey News also provided a peek into the 2019 NHL Draft and has Newhook sitting No. 2 in its early preview, behind highly-touted American forward Jack Hughes.

Newhook was the British Columbia Hockey League’s rookie of the year this season with the Victoria Grizzlies, and has signed a Letter of Intent to attend Boston College on 2019-20.

However, the Halifax Mooseheads own Newhook’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League rights, and will make a big push to get him in the fold over the summer, especially if Halifax is awarded the 2019 Memorial Cup.

Of Newhook, who turned 17 the end of January, The Hockey News writes: “Canada’s best junior A circuit has seen many special players lately, but Newhook’s rookie impact is incredible. Does everything with pace. One of the most dangerous players in the league before a wrist injury.” What a scout says: “Hockey sense is really high. Production as an underager in that league is impressive. Excellent skills.”
