Obituary: Claude Brown made the Flyers soar

The man who for years was the force behind the Gander Flyers’ senior and junior hockey teams passed away over the weekend. Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Famer Claude Brown was 88.

A 2004 inductee into the Hall’s builder category, Brown became involved with the Flyers in 1956 serving under Eric Dawe. Brown eventually took over the organization in 1970.

Between 1970 and 1983, the Gander Junior Flyers, pieced together by Brown, won the Veitch Memorial Trophy and the provincial junior championship five times - in 1973, 1974, 1975, 1981 and 1983.

The senior Flyers have two Herder Memorial Trophy championships to their credit, in 1969 and 1980. Brown was the general manager for the 1980 championship squad.

A funeral service for Brown is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at St. Martin’s Anglican Cathedral in Gander.
