Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Famer Ron Cadigan was 60.
Cadigan played only a handful of Newfoundland Senior Hockey League seasons with the Shamrocks, but it was in the 1979 Herder Memorial Trophy final that the slick forward carved his niche in hockey’s history books.
At old Gander Gardens, Cadigan scored a shorthanded goal in double overtime in Game 7 to give the Shamrocks the Herder crown over the homestanding Flyers.
Heading into the series, Gander was considered the heavy favourites over the upstart Shamrocks.
Following a junior career that saw him win a scoring title and MVP award, Cadigan joined the Avalon Senior Hockey East ranks with Outer Cove and starred in the circuit for nearly two decades.
Over his career in the Avalon East loop, Cadigan collected seven scoring titles, five regular-season MVP awards, three playoff MVP honours, and ten sportsmanship and ability awards while playing on seven league championship squads.
He also played in the St. John’s Inter-City Hockey League, where he was rookie of the year, won a scoring title, playoff MVP honours and led his club to three championships.
Cadigan was inducted into the Newfoundland Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
The Avalon East league honoured Cadigan by retiring his No. 10 Outer Cove jersey.
Cadigan’s two sons, James and Daniel, both play in the Avalon East league with the Northeast Eagles.
In addition to his children, Cadigan is survived by his wife, Barbara.
