Four hockey players from this province will be playing for Canadian university hockey championships starting this week.

Tyler Boland is part of the top-ranked University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, which are playing host to the U Sports championship starting Wednesday in Fredericton, N.B.

Meanwhile, Nicole Blanche of Dunville, Laura Horwood of Grand Falls-Windsor and Katie Peddle of Labrador City are part of the Saint Mary’s Huskies team which will be in London, Ont., for the U Sports women’s hockey nationals hosted by the University of Western Ontario.

UNB won the Atlantic University Sport title Wednesday with a 5-0 win over St. Francis Xavier X-Men, sweeping the best-of-three final. Boland had a big playoff for the Varsity Reds, the No. 1-ranked collegiate team in Canada, with two goals and three assists in five games.

The Huskies needed a deciding Game 3 to defeat the St. FX X-Women 1-0 Tuesday for their AUS crown.

Blanche had a pair of goals in five games for the Huskies. Blanche has been the Bob Gainey of AUS women’s hockey these past two seasons, winning defensive player of the year both times.
