The top teams in provincial major midget hockey proved very stingy as they each swept two-game weekend series.

In Corner Brook, the first-place Western Kings downed the last-place Central IcePak 9-0 Saturday and followed up with a 9-1 win in their Sunday rematch.

Meanwhile, at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts, the St. John’s Maple Leafs blanked the TriPen Osprey 4-0 on Saturday, and then registered a 5-1 victory on Sunday.

While the second-place Maple Leafs (11-7-2) kept pace with the league leaders, Western may prove impossible to catch. The Kings, who have 23 wins in 24 games, need only two regulation-time wins, two St. John’s losses or some equivalent combination to clinch first place in the regular-season standings, even though there are more than two months worth of games remaining.
