St. John's Junior Hockey League: Northeast gets first win after seven losses

The Southern Shore Breakers continue to their maintain their unbeaten record in St. John’s Junior Hockey League, but there no longer is a winless team in the eight-team circuit.

Brandon Sexton had a hat trick and two assists as the Northeast Eagles registered their first victory of the season Sunday at Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay by downing the defending champion Conception Bay North Stars 8-4.

Josh Taylor added two goals and two assists for the Eagles, whose initial win came after a players-only meeting prior to Sunday’s game.

Northeast had suffered a seventh straight loss in being shut out 6-0 by the Avalon Capitals on Saturday.

The Breakers, meanwhile are 8-0-0 after their own 8-4 win. It came Saturday at C.B.S. Arena., where Peter Kavanagh, Kieran O’Driscoll and Donovan Warren each scored two goals as Southern Shore doubled up the CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades.

In fact, the Breakers had two 8-4 wins on the weekend, having beaten the Stars by that score Friday at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts.
