St. John's junior hockey: Whittle scores winner in waning seconds

Tyler Whittle’s second goal with just seconds left in regulation time lifted the Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Hardware Flyers to a 2-1 win over the Cowan Heights Dental Group St. John’s Caps in St. John’s junior hockey Sunday afternoon at the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne.

• Stephen Day scored in overtime as the Avalon Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals edged the Aberdeen Pizza Delight Northeast Eagles 2-1 at the Jack Byrne Arena
• At The Glacier in Mount Pearl, Stephen Perham fired three goals and Daniel Toope had a pair as the Mount Pearl Mark’s Blades trimmed the C.B.N. MoorFrost Stars 7-4. Ryan Dawson had two in a losing cause.
• At the Goulds Arena Saturday night, the Caps defeated Avalon 5-3. Goaltenders Aaron Small of Avalon and Ian Woolfrey of St. John’s stopped 39 shots apiece.
• At the Southern Shore Arena Friday night, Liam Hynes, Justin David, Blake Dalton and A.J. Doyle each scored twice as the Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers trimmed the Eagles 11-4. Curtis Kavanagh had two in a losing cause. Northeast goaltenders Brandon Short and Shane Doyle were busy, stopping 61 shots.
