Three Newfoundlanders suit up in NHL exhibition games Tuesday


Three St. John’s natives, Teddy Purcell, Colin Greening and Clark Bishop, suited up in NHL exhibition games on Tuesday night.

The 32-year-old Purcell, in the Boston Bruins’ training camp on a professional tryout, scored a goal and saw 14 minutes of ice time in the Bruins’ 4-2 preseason win over the Detroit Red Wings in Boston A free agent last summer, the veteran winger had no offers for a new full-time NHL deal this off-season, finally accepting the PTO from Boston.

Meanwhile, in Tampa, Fla., Bishop dressed for the Carolina Hurricanes in their 2-1 exhibition victory over the homestanding Lightning.
Bishop, who saw eight minutes of action, including a couple on the penalty kill, didn’t have any points.
The 21-year-old centre is in the second year of his entry-level contract with the Hurricanes. Last season, he had two goals and six points in 42 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers. He also spent time in the ECHL, registering three goals and 11 points in 21 starts with the Florida Everblades.

Colin Greening

Greening suited up for the Toronto Maple Leafs in an exhibition rematch with Ottawa, one that saw Ottawa prevail 5-2  for a second win in as many nights. He wenr pointless in nine minutes of ice time, including just over two minutes on the PK. The 31-year-old forward played all of last season with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, but signed a new one-year $750,000 deal with the Leafs over the summer.
