Trinity-Placentia, Southern Shore a win away from SJJHL semifinals

The Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Hardware Flyers and Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers both have 2-0 leads in their respective best-of-five quarter-finals following weekend play in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League playoffs.

At the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne Sunday, Tyler Whittle scored 16 seconds into double overtime to give the Flyers a 1-0 win over the Mount Pearl Mark’s Blades. Chris Smith registered the shutout.

The Flyers opened the series last Thursday with a 4-1 win.

Sunday afternoon at Jack Byrne Arena, Peter Kavanagh had four goals and two assists, and Tyler Templeman and Blake Dalton each scored twice as the Breakers trimmed the Northeast Aberdeen Pizza Delight Eagles 8-1. Friday night at the Southern Shore Arena, Dalton had two goals in a 5-1 Shore victory.

On Saturday, the CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades took a 1-0 series lead with a 3-2 win over the Avalon Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals, and the St. John’s Cowan Heights Dental Clinic Caps beat the C.B.N. MoorFrost Stars 10-3 for a 1-0 series lead. Ben Noseworthy led the Caps’ charge with three goals.
