With first place wrapped up by the Western Kings prior to the Christmas break, the St. John’s Maple Leafs solidified their hold on second spot in the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League standings with a 6-4 win over the East Coast Blizzard Thursday night.

It was the final league game of 2017. The teams meet against 6 p.m. Tuesday at The Glacier in Mount Pearl.

At the Goulds Arena Thursday, former Rimouski Oceanic forward Nick Gosse paced the Leafs with a pair of goals. Gosse, from C.B.S., played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season, but opted to return home after failing to win a starting job with the Oceanic this year. Chris Martell, Logan Brothers, Alex Doody and Regan Seymour also scored for the winners.

James Kennedy had a pair of goals for the Blizzard. Andrew Stuckless and Jack Keough added singles.
