The Town of Bay Roberts has given its recreation director the green light to plan for a second edition of the Light the Lamp street hockey tournament.

The inaugural two-day tournament took place earlier this summer and attracted 126 teams. Presenting a financial synopsis for the event, recreation director Ian Flynn acknowledged the event ended up losing just over $12,200, with total expenses coming in at just under $60,000. However, Flynn noted too that almost $11,500 worth of those expenses were capital purchases that would not need to be made again for 2019.

“There were a lot of capital assets purchased in year one that does not need to be purchased in year two,” he said. Those purchases included hockey nets, handheld radios and signage (approximately $3,000 worth of the latter item is reusable). On top of this, the town still has 200 hockey balls and roughly 100 shirts and 100 bags that can be used for 2019.

“I think with some small tweaking on our registration costs and with the capital assets we have, I’d venture to say it would be a profitable event in 2019,” Flynn said.

Deputy Mayor Walter Yetman said the event was great for the town and businesses in particular.

“The benefit to the town is not measurable,” he said.

Flynn reported three gold sponsors for the 2018 edition of the tournament have committed to signing on again for 2019.
