CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The duo of Cole Mackey of Clarenville and Ryan Littlejohn of Bay Roberts took the championship at the Atlantic Beach Volleyball Tour this past weekend in Corner Brook.
As one of two teams with representatives from Clarenville at the event, the team of Mackey and Littlejohn overcame adversity during the preliminary matches and playoffs, as they finished in fourth place after Saturday’s games.
Mackey was suffering from an illness and the team was forced to forfeit a couple games in the tournament.
However, as the fourth seeded team, they defeated the first-place team from Corner Brook in two sets in the semi-finals, putting them in the championship match.
In the finals, they would be victorious over another team from Corner Brook, clinching the title.
Mackey and Littlejohn will now travel to Halifax on Aug. 4-5 for the Atlantic Championships.
At last year’s event, they finished with a silver medal.
