Both teams representing Memorial University won their opening games Thursday at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) curling championships in Fredericton, N.B.
The Sea-Hawks men’s team, skipped by Greg Blyde and including Liam Gregory, Kyle Barron and Ian Withycombe, played just once on the opening day, downing St. Francis Xavier 8-2 in a game conceded after six ends.
The Memorial women, skipped by Rebecca Roberts and including Chantal Newell, Lauren Barron and Stephanie Nadeau, scored three in the eighth and final end in an 8-5 opening-draw win over host UNB, but were on the wrong side of a similar result in the Thursday night draw, giving up two in the eighth in a 7-5 loss to Mount Alison.
The Memorial men take on Dalhousie and Acadia today at the Capital Winter Club, while the Sea-Hawk women face St. FX and Dal.
Three teams from each of the AUS competitions will represent the conference at the 2018 U Sports/CCA championships hosted by the University of Alberta in Leduc, Alta., next month.
