Aside from the Cape Breton Capers, who are running away with first place in Atlantic University Sport women’s soccer (the Capers, at 10-0, are making a run at an unbeaten season), things are very tight in the standings.
The Memorial Sea-Hawks are guaranteed a playoff berth for the conference championship weekend Nov. 2-5 in Antigonish, N.S. However, there is much on the line for Memorial heading into its final games of the regular season.
The Lady Hawks (5-1-5) are tied for second place with the Dalhousie Tigers and the top two finishers will gain byes into the championship weekend semifinals.
Only six points separate the seven teams chasing the remaining five playoff berths
The Sea-Hawks, who also play host to Moncton today and Saturday (5 p.m. and noon), have 19 points, as do the Tigers. St. Francis Xavier has 18 points, followed by Acadia with 17, Moncton with 15 and UNB and UPEI with 13 apiece.
Memorial’s Jessie Noseworthy is fourth in conference scoring with seven goals.
Keeper Sydney Walsh has been outstanding in goal with an AUS-leading eight shutouts in 10 games. So far, she’s made 62 saves, third-most in the conference.
