A new Molson Coors Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy was unveiled Friday morning.
The now-retired former men’s championship trophy dates back to 1954, and was provided by Carling Breweries through the Pepperrell Air Force Base NCO Club.
In the 1960s, it became the Carling Cup and in 1973, the Dominion Ale Cup. When Molson and Carling O’Keefe breweries merged in 1989, it eventually became the Molson Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy to honour Angel and his Regatta involvement.
Sculptor Morgan MacDonald began working on the trophy this past January, using the model of “The Rower” sculpture at the top of the pond. The cast model is mounted on a polished surface of stainless steel to reflect the waters of Quidi Vidi Lake, and its base consists of Douglas fir. The trophy itself weighs 87 pounds. Angel and MacDonald were also joined by some members of the 2017 champion Outer Cove men’s crew.
