Newfoundland rink finishes fourth at national boys U18 curling championships

Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by a rink skipped by Ryan McNeil-Lamswood, finished in fourth place in the boys’ division of the Canadian under-18 curling championships which concluded over the weekend in St. Andrews, N.B.

The Newfoundland foursome lost 4-1 to Northern Ontario in the bronze-medal game, finishing with an overall record of 6-4, including 2-3 in the double knockout championship round.

The rink, which also includes Coleton Vriesendorp, second James Trickett, lead Alex Phillips and coach Laura Phillips, is based out of St. John’s, but McNeil-Lamswood, who was chosen as the Fair Play boys skip for the tourney, is from Stephenville.

In national girls U18 play in St. Andrews, the St. John’s rimk of skip Mackenzie Glynn, third Katie Follett, second Sarah Chaytor, lead Camille Burt and coach Dave Trickett finished out of the playoff round with a 2-4 preliminary record. However, Trickett did coach the team of Lauren Ferguson (P.E.I.) and Troy Chong (B.C.) that won a silver medal in the mixed doubles/consolation competition featuring various combinations of players and coaches who didn’t make the boys or girls playoffs.
