MVP Pender helped Caribous to Herder championship

Veteran senior hockey player Justin Pender is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.

Pender played a big role in helping the Clarenville Caribous win the provincial senior hockey championship and the Herder Memorial Trophy last weekend, sweeping the St. John’s Caps in four straight games.

Pender, a former professional hockey player, won the Cliff Gorman Memorial Award as the series MVP.

Pender, who had two goals in the four-game final, played four years in the ECHL following a four-year Quebec Major Junior Hockey League career with the Halifax Mooseheads. He also played one season in the Central Hockey League.

It was the fourth Herder Memorial Trophy won by the Caribous.
