Bulldogs prove too tough again, win fifth straight St. John's senior softball crown

These dogs had their day in 2017 Actually, they had quite a few of them.

The Bigs shortstop Peter Kavanagh throws from his knees after making diving catch in Game 6 of the St. John’s senior softball final against the Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs Monday night at Lions Park. Besides providing strong defence, Kavanagh also supplied The Bigs with a two-run home run Monday, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Bulldogs from taking their fifth straight league title.

The Kelly’s Pub Bulldogs won their fifth straight Molson St. John’s senior softball crown Monday night, downing The Bigs 3-2 at Lions Park.

In taking the best-of-seven league final in six games, the Bulldogs won their third crown of the season — they also won the St. John’s Day tourney in late June and the senior provincials earlier this month.

Blair Ezekiel hit a two-run homer in and Andrew Wade delivered the winning blow with a solo shot in the sixth inning as Kelly’s Pub Monday.

Peter Kavanagh hit a two-run homer to supply all The Bigs' offence.

Ezekiel, who hit .417 in the post-season, was the playoffs’ top batter and shared playoff MVP honours with Monday’s winning pitcher, Sean Cleary (4H, 1W, 11K).

Mark Power (3H, 3W, 7K) took the loss.

With their five consecutive crowns, the Bulldogs tie a league record original set by Green Sleeves (1988-92). Members of the winning team include Cleary, Ezekiel, Wade, Stephen Strapp, Jon Kelly, Gary Bruce, Tyler Wall, Scott Myers, Kurt Fardy, Stephen Dobbin, Shane Boland, Mark Lewis, Daniel Dalton and Liam Myers. Jim Dunphy is the head coach.
