The Canadians beat Mexico 6-4 Wednesday to improve to 7-0. Canada is atop Pool B and will face the second-place team from Pool A in its first playoff game.

There is no softball in the Dominican Republic today, as the island braces for Hurricane Maria. Santo Domingo, where the tournament is being held, is under a tropical storm warning with heavy rain and high winds expected.

Three Newfoundlanders – Kyle Ezekiel of Holyrood, Jason Hill of St. John’s and Jeremy O’Reilly of Placentia – along with assistant coaches John Hill of St. John’s and Les Howey of C.B.S., are on Team Canada.

Ezekiel had two hits against the Mexicans, and Hill knocked in a run. O’Reilly didn’t play.
