It can’t be classified as a huge surprise. Nevertheless, it’s still big news for the St. John’s Edge and their fans.
Edge star and reigning National Basketball League of Canada MVP Carl English announced today he will be back as a player for the 2018-19 season.
English had always seemed to be tilting towards a return to the court and had been continuing his off-season workouts even as he took on new duties as the Edge’s interim general manager. And he said he was aware many fans — some who had spoken to him directly — were waiting on his decision before committing to ticket buying for the second season of the NBL Canada at Mile One Centre.
Still, English who turns 38 next February, was the oldest player is the league last season and almost certainly will be so again in 2018-19. And he has long said whether he felt physically ready for the grind of another campaign would be the chief factor in whether he would play or not.
In 2017-18, English missed 10 of the Edge’s 40 regular-season games because of injuries or for rest purposes, but when he played, he was stellar, averaging nearly 24 points and more than five rebounds per game, with an average 34.5 minutes of floor time. He was also one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters, making 137 of 365 attempts from long range.
In addition, he set a new NBL Canada single-game record with 58 points in an early-March game against the KW Titans at Mile One Centre.
As for his off-court work, there is no word English’s interim GM title is disappearing completely, at least immediately. However the Patrick’s Cove native has already indicated that if and once he committed to playing again, it would make efforts to sign or re-sign players at least a tad more awkward, seeing as he would be dealing with former and/or future teammates.
As a result, don’t be surprised if much of the responsibilities English had as far as contract negotiations now end up being handed off to others within the Edge organization.
