Game On, which trailed 3-0 at one point in the game, got the win in walk-off fashion — on a sacrifice fly — with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The champions were undefeated in the eight-team provincial tourney, going 5-0 overall.
Contrast that with Game On Gear’s record in the St. John’s intermediate league, where the Waterford Valley-based team is 3-4, with one of its losses being a 7-1 setback at the hands of Placentia’s Lafontaine Club 10 days ago.
But it was a different story in a much-tighter game Sunday at Lions Park, where player-coach Stephen Dobbin drove in two runs for Game On.
Shane Dobbin got the win with one innings of scoreless work in relief of tournament MVP Jordan Noftall (1W, 2K), who scattered eight hits in his six innings on the mound.
Johnny O’Reilly (7H, 0W, 5K) suffered the loss for Lafontaine, which got two RBIs from Mike Gambin.
Noftall pitched three wins, allowing just six earned runs in 27 innings of work while striking out 19. He was also the tourney’s top batter, with a .529 average and five RBIs.
Andrew Kelly of Game On, who hit .429 and drove in a half-dozen runs, won the sportsmanship and ability award.
Other members of the championship team include Brad Budden, Shane Dobbin, Patrick Heffernan, Nathan Kenny, Ryan Kenny, Mark King, Mike King, Ryan Noftall, Brandon Pomroy and Tyler Wall.
Game On had downed Carbonear’s MJR Masonry 5-1 in one semifinal, while Lafontaine edged Bay Roberts Coors Light 4-3 in other.
