It took a while, but the Molson St. John’s Intermediate Softball League got in its second day of action of the 2018 season.
The league opened with a pair of games on May 27, but inclement weather coupled with St. John’s senior league schedule, meant a long delay until intermediate play resumed Thursday night at Lions Park.
The first game was an abbreviated affair as veteran Ward Gosse struck out seven and allowed just two hits over five innings to lead Roebothan McKay Marshall Republic to a 9-1 win over the Chayee Bourras NL Selects, the provincial under-19 team.
Leon Cantwell drove in five runs for the winners, three of his RBIs coming on a fourth-inning homer, Andrew Corcoran also homered for RMM and had two RBIs.
Selects starter Marcus Pittman took the loss, giving up six runs. Joel Nash and Jordan Pomeroy had the lone hits for the U19 squad.
In Thursday’s second game, the C.B.S. Storm edged defending champion Lafontaine Club of Placentia 8-7.
Tyler McDonald hit two homers and drove in four runs for the Storm, and in doing so backed his own complete-game, 12-strikeout pitching performance.
Lafontaine starter Johnny O’Reilly took the loss, charged with seven runs in five innings.
Craig Hammond collected four hits for C.B.S.
Nick Pittman had three hits — a double and two triples — for Lafontaine, while Andrew Kelly had a two-run homer.
If the forecast holds, the league won’t have to wait nearly as long to get in some more games. Two games are scheduled tonight:
Sable Building & Design facing RMM at 6 p.m., while the C.B.C. Junior Canadians and Chayee Bourras tangle at 8 p.m.
