Judy Byrne has been named new executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association.
Byrne, who has been technical director for the NLBA the last nine years, replaces Bill Murphy, who has been the association’s executive director for nearly three decades.
Byrne, who is originally from Placentia, was a standout player for the Memorial University Sea-Hawks varsity basketball team in the early 1990s before moving to the United States after her education.
She returned to the province in 2007 and became an Memorial women’s basketball assistant coach for Doug Partridge in 2008-09.
As technical director, Byrne has run the NCCP, grassroots and provincial programs of the NLBA. Association president Tom Warren said “she has been groomed for this position (executive director) over the last few years.”
Murphy will remain in the position until the end of December before entering retirement.
