Kaetlyn Osmond’s successful performance in the ladies’ short skate at the 2018 Winter Olympics means thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are in for another late night.
The 22-year-old Marystown native is in third place after a clean showing in Wednesday’s short skate in PyeongChang, South Korea gave her a personal-best score of 78.87.
Ahead of her are Alina Zagitova, who leads after a world-record 82.92 in the short, and two-time reigning Evgenia Medvedeva (81.61).
That puts Osmond within hailing distance of the two Russians, although she will be conscious of those just behind her — Japanese skaters Satoko Miyahara, fourth with 75.94 points, and Kaori Sakamoto, who is fifth with 73.18. Italy's Caroline Kostner sits sixth at 73.15.

The free skate (long program) goes early Friday afternoon in Pyeongchang, but as was the case with the short skate, the time difference makes it the wee hours of the same morning in this province.
Osmond, who will be skating to music from Tchaikovsky’s Swam Lake and Mansell’s Black Swan, will be the second-last skater, hitting the ice after Zagitova and before Medvedeva. Her scheduled start is 1:10 a.m. Friday morning, Newfoundland time.
