What is the 16th Targa Newfoundland began with the Prologue (practice) stages in Flatrock and Bauline on Sunday, with no incidents reported before the 33 competing vehicles returned to Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay for an evening car show.
The competitors will move west Monday, eventually setting up at the Eastlink Events Centre in Clarenville after stages in Black River, Garden Cove, North Harbour, North West Brook and Hodges Cove.
Overall, the Targa will cover over 1,500 kilometres —including over 430 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out stages — on the Avalon, Bonavista and Burin Peninsulas until the competitive event concludes Friday.
Last-minute local entries include Josh Collins of Placentia, best-known as a competitor national and regional stock car racing, and Targa Bambina winner Andrew Warren of Marystown.
