With a new National Basketball League of Canada team set to start play in St. John’s this winter, interest in basketball here in the province is at an all-time high.

The trickle down effect that teams of this level have, from U-Sport teams at Memorial down through school and minor teams, and the abundance of men’s and women’s leagues, means more players are participating in the sport.

This creates a need, a need for officials to manage those games.

In an attempt to attract and train new officials, the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Officials Association (NABO) is hosting a novice officials clinic Nov. 3-4 at Leary’s Brook Junior High in St. John’s.

Fred Wakeham will serve as the head clinician for anyone, female of male, who would like to learn the nuances of basketball officiating. The sessions include both classroom and on court instruction in rules and mechanics.

The first session is on Nov. 3 from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday features two sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1-3 p.m., all at Leary’s Brook.

Pre-registration is required and can be done by emailing Fred Wakeham at [email protected].  Anyone with questions about the clinic can have those queries answered at the same email address.

Deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 30.
