Newfoundland swimmers came away with four medals from the Canadian swimming championships which finished up Sunday at the Pan Am pool in Winnipeg.
Noah Cumby of St. John’s, who swam with the St. John’s Legends and just completed his freshman season with Texas Christian University in Dallas, won a silver medal, while Paralympian Katarina Roxon of Kippens won three medals.
Competing in the 100-metre freestyle A final, Cumby finished second with a personal best time of 50.70 seconds, just a blink ahead of Quebec’s Philippe Marcoux, who stopped the clock in 50.71. Ruslan Gaziev of Manitoba won the race in 49.75.
The Holy Heart of Mary high school graduate just finished his freshman NCAA season with TCU, where he’s on an athletic scholarship.
In March, Cumby broke a school record in the 200m freestyle during a meet in Cleveland.
In that same 100m race in Winnipeg, former Legends swimmer Owen Daly of St. John’s, now living in Montreal and swimming for the CAMO club, finished eighth.
Roxon, from the Aqua Aces Swim Club in Stephenville, won gold in the 100 metre breastroke and a pair of bronze in the 100 metre butterfly and 200 individual medley.
