The Kelly’s Pub Junior Canadians had to settle for some consolation over the weekend at the Canadian junior (under-23) men’s fastpitch championship in St-Leonard-d'Aston, Que.

The Newfoundland and Labrador entry finished seventh in the tourney, finishing up with a 7-4 win in a placing game against the Prince Edward Island representatives.

That left the Junior Canadian with an overall 3-6 record. That included a tough 5-4 extra-inning loss to the host St-Leonard-d'Aston Express Saturday in a playoff  matchup between teams with just one life.

In the consolation win over P.E.I., national junior team member Jordan Pomeroy went four-for-four at the plate for the Junior Canadians, cracking a three-run home run and a triple, while scoring three times.

Andrew Kelly added two hits for the N.L. team, which got a solid pitching performance from Eric Healey (0W, 8K), who allowed one run on four hits over six innings before giving way to Jordan Noftall.

Healey had taken the loss in relief of Noftall in the eight-inning loss to the Express.

Kelly and Gerald Wall, the latter with a double and a triple, each had two hits for the Junior Canadians in that game.

Meanwhile, the N.L. Selects finished eighth at the Canadian under-16 boys fastpitch championship which clewed up over the weekend in Innerkip, Ont. about 30 kilometres west of Brantford.

The Selects had two wins in nine games, including a 10-3 loss to Quebec in a consolation/placing game.

Linden Power and Jordan Bishop each had doubles for the N.L. U16s, with Reid Deering and Matthew King sharing pitching duties.
