Three Newfoundlanders are suiting up with the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics who are competing in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s basketball championship this week in Sackville, N.B.
Maria Carroll and Kelsey Crocker of St. John’s, along with Kelsey McGrath of Torbay helped the Mystics to a 17-1 record and first-place overall in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA only to lose in overtime to the Mount Allison Mounties in the conference championship game. However, since Mount A was hosting the nationals, the runners-up in the ACAA championship also gained a berth.
Carroll, a fourth-year point guard who started every game for Mount Saint Vincent, was named an ACAA first-team all-star after leading the conference in steals and assists. McGrath, a third-year forward, was a second-team all-star.
Crocker is a rookie wing for the Mystics who compete in what is also known as the Atlantic small schools conference against Mount Allison, St. Thomas University, Holland College, Crandall University, the University of Kings College and the University of New Brunswick-Saint John.
Mount Saint Vincent opens the national tourney against the top-ranked Humber Hawks on Thursday afternoon.
