Tuff is a 6-8, 16-year-old Grade 12 student at Waterford Valley high. He attended an Open ID camp, and was one of 64 players selected to move on to the Assessment Camp, which attracted some of the country’s top U20 talent. Among those was R.J. Barrett, the MVP of the world U19 championship, which Canada won last summer.
Barrett, who attends school in Florida, is one of the top college prospects in the United States.
The assessment camp was an opportunity for staff to evaluate players ahead of next year’s FIBA U18 Americas Championship and FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.
Tuff, a member of the province’s Canada Games team last summer, is a relative newcomer to the game. He only joined the Games team program last January, and prior to last season had never played basketball beyond the junior high level.
His first stint with a Newfoundland and Labrador provincial team or all-star squad came in the summer of 2016 at the national U17 championship in Winnipeg.
