All the results were decisive on Thursday, the opening day of play in the School Sports NL provincial 4A high school girls’ basketball championship being held at St. Kevin’s High School in Goulds.
The host Mavericks ran their season record to 26-1 with an 81-53 win over the O’Donel Patriots of Mount Pearl; the Holy Trinity Tigers of Torbay defeated the Corner Brook Titans 80-43; the Holy Heart Highlanders downed the Prince of Wales Collegiate Cavaliers 80-37; and in another all St. John’s matchup, the Waterford Valley Warriors beat the Gonzaga Vikings 65-32.

The eight teams are split into two divisions. J oining St. Kevin’s in Division A are Holy Trinity, O’Donel Patriots and Corner Brook. Division B is an all-St. John's grouping with two-time defending champion Waterford Valley, Holy Heart, Gonzaga Vikings and PWC.
Preliminary-round play continues today and Saturday, with semifinal crossovers on Saturday evening.
The final is set for noon Sunday.
