Newfoundland Rock squad goes 7-0 to claim championship; U16 team just misses out on medal

The Newfoundland Rock won the Eastern Canadian under-18 rugby championship in Wolfville, N.S., Sunday. The Rock beat Ontario 24-10 to finish the tournament 7-0. Members of the team are Jake Taylor, Sebastien Eyre, Hunter Ryan, Andrew Shears, Blake Shea, Jamin Hodgkins, Connor McKinney, Laurie Baldwin, Elliott Brewer, Noah Parsons, Carter Gavin, Taylor Van De Wiel, Lucas Shortall, Mitchell Rogers, Alex Hickman, Stefan Abbott, Ryan Taylor, Ellis Halliday, David Mallard, Evan McKenzie, Max Tavenor, Ryan Goodyear, Matthew Terry and Michael McCarthy. Comprising the coaching and management staff are Morgan Lovell, Mark McCarthy, Kevin Parfrey and Chris Hickman.

The Newfoundland Rock ran the table at the Eastern Canadian under-18 rugby championship in Wolfville, N.S., capping off an unbeaten run with a 24-10 win over Ontario in the gold-medal game Sunday.

The Rock went 7-0 in the event.

The Rock’s under-16 squad wasn’t quite so fortunate, dropping a 15-10 decision to Ontario Central in the bronze-medal game.

For the U18s, Alex Hickman, Michael McCarthy, Laurie Baldwin and Ellis Halliday scored the tries, while Lucas Shortall made good on two conversions.

The score at the half was 12-10 for Newfoundland before the Rock came out and dominated the second half.

The N.L. side advanced to the final with a 30-7 win over Prince Edward Island in a Friday semifinal.

Meanwhile, in the U16 division, Newfoundland dropped its semifinal to another Ontario entry on Friday.
