Memorial University basketball teams didn’t play this past weekend, but the AUS women’s hoops team made some news.
The team announced Gabrielle Roche, a forward with the Waterford Valley High School Warriors in St. John’s, has committed to attend Memorial next year to study kiniseology.
The 6-2 Roche has been part of provincial teams for four straight seasons and has played at the high school level since Grade 9.
Last year, she was a member of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 Canada Games team in Winnipeg, although she had her competition cut short by injury.
A recipient of Premier Athletic Awards in 2015 and 2016, Roche was the tourney MVP as Waterford Valley won the 2017 Hall of Fame Cup (Elite Eight) title.
“We have been recruiting Gabrielle since she was in Grade 10, so we are thrilled to have her join our program,” said Memorial head coach Mark English.
“She is a fantastic athlete with incredible length and speed. Her shot has improved throughout her high school career and her ability to change shots and rebound the basketball is exactly we need as we look to continue to take our program to another level.”
