The Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s volleyball team found themselves back in the win column over the weekend, sweeping a trio of games from the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds at the Field House.
The Sea-Hawks, coming off three straight losses to Saint Mary’s Huskies a week ago in Halifax, registered 3-2, 3-0 and 3-2 victories over the winless Varsity Reds.
That improved Memorial’s record to 8-6 on the year, putting them into a tie with Acadia Axewomen for third place with 16 points apiece, two behind Saint Mary’s Huskies.
Dalhousie Tigers lead the Atlantic University Sport conference with an 11-1 record.
The Sea-Hawks are off next weekend, returning to action on February 2-4 when they travel to Halifax for three games against the Tigers.
The Sea-Hawks’ swim teams were in Halifax over the weekend for the Dalhousie Invitational. Memorial’s women’s team finished second to host Dal of the five teams competing, while the men’s squad was third. The host Tigers were first.
Memorial’s men’s and women’s basketball teams enjoyed a bye weekend before returning to action at the Field House next Saturday and Sunday against Acadia.
The surprising men’s team sits in the sixth and final playoff spot at 4-8, in comfortable position on 2-10 Cape Breton and 0-12 UPEI.
The Sea-Hawks lost a pair of games to Dalhousie a week ago, one by seven points and the other in overtime. The Tigers are the three-time defending AUS champs and last year’s U Sports national bronze medalists.
The Axemen come to town currently sitting in second place at 10-2.
As for the Lady Birds, they’re coming off back-to-back splits last weekend against Dal and two weeks ago against Cape Breton.
MUN is fourth in the AUS at 7-5, two points behind Saint Mary’s and Cape Breton. The Axewomen, in town next weekend, lead at 11-1.
