Junior hockey player Grant Thompson is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.
Thompson had a great start to the Don Johnson Cup Atlantic junior B hockey championship in Membertou, N.S. — just outside Sydney — Wednesday, scoring four goals as the Mark’s Mount Pearl Blades won their first game of the tournament with a 5-4 decision over the Moncton, N.B. Vito’s.
Thompson scored a last-minute shorthanded goal in the third period to force overtime, and then potted the game-winner 2:44 into the extra session.
The Blades are the St. John’s Junior Hockey League championship, thus getting the opportunity to represent the province in the Don Johnson Cup.
