Long-distance runner Dave Freake is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.
Freake turned in a very impressive performance last weekend, winning the Toronto Marathon in a time of two hours, 33 minutes and 57 seconds, outdistancing 1,389 other runners.
He wasn’t the only Newfoundlander to do well at the marathon, which started in Markham and ended on Toronto’s lake front. Charlie Kourvelas of St. John’s was fifth, and Anne Johnston of St. John’s was second among 437 females.
Freake has consistently been one of the top runners in the province for the past number of years. Since 2013, he’s placed sixth in the Tely 10, fifth on two occasions, fourth and in third place last year.
