Vashishta, Avengers start summer cricket season in record-breaking style

Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 summer league got underway Saturday with two matches, including one that featured record-breaking innings by Rahul Vashishta, who ran up 161 runs, leading the defending champion Avengers to a big 135-run win over the Tigers.

The previous highest individual score recorded in Newfoundland cricket history was 108 in 2015.

Records show there have been six scores of over a hundred in Newfoundland cricket history, four in the revitalized Summer League that started in 2011, and two others in the 1890s.

The Avengers final total was 246 for one wicket, the highest total in the Summer League since its inception six years ago.

Rahul Roy made a useful contribution with 53 runs for the winners. Overall, the Tigers made 111 runs, losing seven wickets, led by 42 runs from Saad Jahangir.

In the second game of opening day, the Newfoundland Superkings beat the Eagles by 79 runs. 

The Superkings batted first, amassing 139 runs for six wickets. Adeel Ilyas was their top scorer with 45 runs, supported by 32 from Sajwal Osto and 23 from Neelav Deewan. 

The Eagles were bowled out for 60 runs, with Mukul Diwan taking four wickets and Taqrim Ghous three wickets.
