The St. Kevin’s Mavericks, Holy Heart Highlanders, the West Coast Under-16s and Templeton Academy may have won the banners, but the big winner from the fifth Keith Keating Memorial basketball tournament was cancer research with $21,000 raised from the 2017 tournament, which finished up Sunday.
The makes for a five-year total for $91,000 raised from the tournament, held in memory of a long-time basketball coach and volunteer.
A very strong Highlanders team won the male Tier I crown, beating the Gonzaga Vikings 100-70 behind Nick Fowler’s 19 points. Jacob Ryan and Hunter Ryan both had 14 points apiece for the Vikings.
Alex Sparrow of Heart was the tournament MVP.
The West Coast U16s got past Holy Heart’s B squad 66-57 to win the Tier II crown. Players of the game were Riley Ward of Holy Heart and Brady Ruth from the west coast.
Jacob Evoy from the West Coast U16 squad was the MVP.
Templeton Academy, from Meadows on the west coast, took the Tier III final, beating Mount Pearl Senior High’s junior squad 61-50 behind Ian Morgan’s 23 points. Joey Cramm scored 18 in a losing cause.
Morgan was the MVP.
St. Kevin’s defeated the Waterford Valley Warriors 70-51 to win the female Tier I championship, behind Grace Bennett’s 33 points. Alyssa Jenkins scored 20 for the Warriors.
Emma Power of St. Kevin’s was the MVP, and Sarah Morris of Waterford Valley won the Carl George Perseverance Award.
Members of the tournament all-star teams were Fowler, Taylor Van de Wiel (Waterford Valley), Jacob Ryan, Gavin Wall (Mobile) and Matt Pennell (O’Donel) in Tier I, Evoy, Colin Lundrigan (Fatima), Brandon Froggatt (Holy Spirit) and Mike Burt (Holy Heart B) in Tier II, Parker Combden (Templeton), Matthew Butt (Carbonear), J.P. Agbesse (Rock Elite) and Mike O’Connor (Mount Pearl Senior High) in Tier III, and Power, Carly Stevenson (Holy Heart), Kristen Jenkins (Waterford Valley), Hannah Green (Holy Trinity) and Kielley Emberley (St. Kevin’s) in female Tier I.
