The Sea-Hawks have been on the road the past two weekends, including the disastrous Nova Scotia trip last Saturday and Sunday.
The men’s Sea-Hawks squad was swept by St. Francis Xavier X-Men and Cape Breton University Capers (1-0 and 3-2), while the Lady Birds were thumped 5-0 by the Capers and followed up with a scoreless draw with St. FX.
The men are 3-3 and sit in fifth place in the Atlantic University Sport conference standings, with the 1-2-2 University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in town for games 3:15 p.m. today and 2:15 Sunday afternoon.
The Varsity Reds have had trouble finding the back of the net this season, managing only three goals. The Sea-Hawks, however, share the conference lead with Acadia with 16 tallies apiece.
Memorial’s Tyler Forsey and Dan Hayfield of St. FX are tied for the conference lead in goals with six apiece.
Speaking of Forsey, he received some love recently from “Red Nation: Canada’s Online Soccer Magazine”, which had him at No. 10 on the list of the 10 best soccer prospects in U Sports Canadian men’s soccer.
“An attacker,” it read in part, “Forsey uses both his speed and agility on the ball to create multiple opportunities for himself and his teammates.”
As for the Memorial women’s soccer team this weekend, the Lady Birds are still in a solid position despite last weekend, sitting 4-1-1 and second in the conference. It’s tight, however, as Memorial is two points behind Cape Breton and one ahead of St. FX.
The Varsity Reds’ women’s squad is also struggling this season, winless in five games (0-4-1). In the five starts, UNB has managed only a pair of goals. Memorial, on the other hand, has 20 goals, second only to Cape Breton’s 20.
Sea-Hawks’ fifth-year striker Jessie Noseworthy leads the AUS with five goals.
The women’s games are scheduled for 1 p.m. today and noon Sunday.
All four games are at King George V Park.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Sea-Hawks’ men’s basketball team gets its first taste of pre-season action this weekend with a three-game series in Ontario, which began last night at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. It continues today at Hamilton’s McMaster University before finishing up Sunday in Toronto against York University.
The Sea-Hawks finished 12-8 last season.
VOLLEYBALL
The Sea-Hawks’ are in Ottawa this weekend for the Gee Gees Pre-Season Classic, the third straight year Memorial has appeared in the annual event at the University of Ottawa.
Memorial was 3-2 last season, and 4-1 in 2015.
The Sea-Hawks played twice Friday night against Western and Montreal, and have two games scheduled for today against Guelph and McGill. Playoffs are set for Sunday.
The Sea-Hawks reached the AUS final last season, before losing 3-0 to Dalhousie University.
