The 38th annual Molson St. John’s Day senior fastpitch tournament begins today at Lions Park, where five teams will be chasing a qualifying berth in the International Softball Congress (ISC) championships later this summer.
The five teams are all members of the St. John’s Senior Softball League, 3 Cheers Pub Bud Light Dodgers, Kelly's Pub Junior Canadians, defending tournament champion Kelly's Pub Molson Bulldogs, NTV Hitmen and The Bigs.
The first of five preliminary-stage games will be played at 6 p.m. tonight. With the conclusion of that stage on Saturday afternoon, all teams will begin the playoff round.
The first- and second-place finishers will meet, with the winner going directly to Sunday’s final. Meanwhile, the fifth- and fourth-place teams will play in a loser-goes-home contest and the winner advancing to play the third-place team on Sunday morning.
The victor in the latter contest takes in the 1-2 loser in a semifinal that will determine the who else will advance to the championship final, set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
