Five games. Five shutouts. That was the weekend in Molson Challenge Cup provincial men’s soccer.

One of the results involved a scoreless draw — that came Sunday on the west coast, where homestanding Corner Brook Steers Insurance took on the C.B.S. First Choice Strikers. Another, a Saturday game at the Gushue Complex, saw the first-place and defending champion St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians and Mount Pearl First Choice Haircutters (2-2-5) wind up in a 2-2 tie.

The other three games saw teams post shutout wins.

In a Sunday rematch, St. Lawrence (7-2-1) blanked Mount Pearl 3-0; Feildians (4-1-3) shaded struggling Holy Cross Kirby 1-0 on Saturday; and the Strikers (4-3-2) shut out Corner Brook 3-0, also on Saturday.

Of note from the weekend:

• D’Arcy Bennett was the goalkeeper for C.B.S. in both of the team’s weekend’s game, meaning he’s up to four shutouts on the season.

• The team with the most shutouts is St. Lawrence, with six, three each by John Douglas and Patrick Slaney.

• The point earned by Corner Brook (0-7-1) on Sunday was the team’s first in eight games this season.

• Erick Mathiasen of C.B.S. is alone as the league’s scoring leaders with six tallies, two of them picked up in the Strikers’ victory Saturday.

• With three setbacks through its first seven games, Holy Cross (1-3-3) already has more losses then in all of 2016, when it went 16-2-4.
