Challenge Cup: Mount Pearl, Laurentians win twice over the weekend

The St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians extended their first-place lead, while the race for other playoff positions remained extremely tight after weekend play in Molson Challenge Cup provincial men’s soccer.

The defending champions Laurentians downed visiting Feildians Ernst and Young twice at Centennial Field, edging the Double Blues 2-1 Saturday, then posting a 2-0 shutout win Sunday.
Also winning twice on the weekend were the Mount Pearl First Choice Haircutters, who ended Holy Cross’s six-game winning streak by beating the Crusaders 3-1 Saturday at the Gushue Complex, then followed up on that victory by blanking the C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers 2-0 on Sunday.
The wins moved Mount Pearl into third place in the standings, one point behind Holy Cross, which has a game in hand.
The Feildians, three points back of Mount Pearl, hold fourth place and what would be the final playoff spot. They’re a point in front of C.B.S., which has played one fewer game. The Strikers gained some ground Saturday in Topsail with a 6-0 win over last-place Corner Brook Steers Insurance United.
Corner Brook was also whitewashed Sunday at King George V Park in St. John’s, losing 4-0 to Holy Cross.
